STATCOM Explained: Working Principle, Control and Applications

Introduction

A STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) is a shunt-connected FACTS device used primarily for fast reactive-power compensation and voltage regulation. STATCOM technology is based on a voltage-source converter (VSC), which generates a controllable AC voltage and exchanges reactive current with the electrical grid.

Why Is STATCOM Required?

Electrical loads and transmission systems continuously change their reactive-power requirements. A shortage of reactive power can result in low bus voltage, increased transmission losses, reduced voltage stability and poor power factor.

Basic STATCOM Configuration

  • Voltage Source Converter
  • DC-link capacitor
  • Coupling transformer or reactor
  • Measurement system
  • Voltage and current controller
  • PWM or converter switching system

STATCOM Working Principle

The basic operating principle is based on controlling the converter voltage relative to the grid voltage. By controlling the magnitude and phase of the converter output, the STATCOM can supply or absorb reactive current.

STATCOM Supplying Reactive Power

When controlled for capacitive operation, reactive current flows from the STATCOM toward the grid and the STATCOM supports the system voltage.

STATCOM Absorbing Reactive Power

When controlled for inductive operation, reactive current flows from the grid toward the STATCOM and the device absorbs reactive power.

STATCOM Control System

A practical control system may contain a Phase Locked Loop, abc-to-dq transformation, voltage controller, current controller, DC-link controller and PWM generator. The controller measures AC voltage, AC current, DC-link voltage and reactive power and generates switching commands for the converter.

Voltage Regulation

One of the major applications of STATCOM is maintaining the voltage of a selected bus. The measured voltage is compared with a reference voltage and the controller generates a reactive-current command to reduce the voltage error.

STATCOM During Faults

Voltage can fall sharply during a short-circuit fault. A properly controlled STATCOM can rapidly provide reactive current to support the voltage and can help improve voltage recovery after the disturbance.

STATCOM Applications

  • Transmission voltage regulation
  • Distribution voltage regulation
  • Renewable-energy integration
  • Wind-farm voltage support
  • Solar-power integration
  • Power-factor improvement
  • Voltage-stability improvement
  • Dynamic reactive-power compensation

STATCOM for Solar and Wind Systems

Renewable-energy plants may experience changing operating conditions. A STATCOM can help maintain grid voltage while the renewable plant changes its active-power output. This makes STATCOM an important research area for modern power systems with high renewable penetration.

STATCOM Simulation in MATLAB/Simulink

A typical MATLAB/Simulink STATCOM model contains a three-phase source, transmission line, transformer, load, STATCOM, measurement blocks, controller and PWM generator.

Researchers can introduce a load change or fault and compare bus voltage, reactive power, active power and voltage recovery with and without STATCOM.
