Multilevel Inverters: A Project Guide for Power Electronics Students
Learn the fundamentals of multilevel inverters and how to structure a MATLAB/Simulink student project around diode-clamped and cascaded H-bridge topologies.
Multilevel inverters are a staple project topic in power electronics because they clearly demonstrate how switching topology affects output waveform quality — a concept that's easy to visualize and simulate.
Why Multilevel Inverters Matter
A conventional two-level inverter produces a square-ish output with high harmonic content. Multilevel inverters synthesize the output voltage using several smaller voltage steps, resulting in a waveform closer to a sine wave with lower THD — useful for medium and high-voltage applications.
Common Topologies to Simulate
1. Diode-Clamped (Neutral Point Clamped) Inverter
Uses clamping diodes to achieve multiple voltage levels from a split DC bus. A good starting project for understanding switching states.
2. Flying Capacitor Inverter
Uses capacitors instead of diodes to clamp voltage levels, offering more switching state redundancy but added capacitor voltage balancing complexity.
3. Cascaded H-Bridge Inverter
Connects multiple H-bridge cells in series, each with its own DC source. It's modular and relatively straightforward to scale, making it a popular choice for student projects.
Structuring the Project
- Build a two-level inverter first and measure its THD as a baseline
- Implement your chosen multilevel topology (5-level or 7-level is typical for coursework)
- Apply an appropriate modulation technique — level-shifted or phase-shifted PWM are common choices
- Compare THD and output waveform quality against the two-level baseline
Where Students Get Stuck
Capacitor voltage balancing in flying capacitor topologies and DC bus voltage balancing in diode-clamped designs are the two most common sources of simulation instability. Budget extra time for tuning these if you choose either topology.
