Understanding FACTS Devices: STATCOM, SVC, and UPFC Explained

A clear explanation of FACTS devices — STATCOM, SVC, and UPFC — covering how they work and how to approach them as student simulation projects.

Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices are a favorite topic for power systems projects because they sit at the intersection of power electronics and transmission engineering. Here's a plain-language breakdown of the three most commonly studied devices.

Static VAR Compensator (SVC)

An SVC is a shunt-connected device that uses thyristor-controlled reactors and capacitors to regulate reactive power at a bus. It's relatively simple to model and is often the first FACTS device students simulate, since it demonstrates voltage support without complex switching control.

Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM)

STATCOM performs a similar function to SVC — reactive power compensation — but uses a voltage-source converter instead of thyristor-switched elements. This gives it faster response and better performance during voltage disturbances, at the cost of more complex control design.

Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC)

UPFC is the most versatile FACTS device, capable of controlling voltage, active power flow, and reactive power flow simultaneously. It combines a shunt converter (like a STATCOM) with a series converter, connected through a common DC link. It's more advanced to model but makes for an impressive M.E or PhD-level project.

How to Approach These as Projects

A typical simulation project structure looks like this:

  1. Build a base transmission network without the FACTS device
  2. Observe voltage or power flow issues under a specific loading or fault condition
  3. Add the FACTS device and its control loop
  4. Compare system performance before and after compensation

Common Pitfalls

Students often underestimate how sensitive these models are to controller tuning — a poorly tuned PI controller in the STATCOM or UPFC control loop can make the whole system unstable, even if the power circuit is modeled correctly.

If you're working on a FACTS-based project and need help with controller tuning or interpreting your simulation results, our team has hands-on experience with SVC, STATCOM, and UPFC modeling in MATLAB and PSCAD.
