Solar PV System Simulation Using MATLAB/Simulink: Step-by-Step
A step-by-step guide to simulating a solar photovoltaic system in MATLAB/Simulink, covering PV modeling, MPPT, and grid-connected inverter basics.
Solar photovoltaic (PV) simulation is one of the most popular renewable energy project categories among final year and M.E students, largely because it combines circuit modeling, control systems, and power electronics in a single project.
Step 1: Model the PV Cell
Start with the single-diode equivalent circuit model of a solar cell. Simulink's block libraries let you build this from basic current source, diode, and resistor blocks, or you can use the built-in PV array block available in the Simscape Electrical library.
Step 2: Generate I-V and P-V Characteristics
Before adding any control, verify your PV model by plotting current-voltage and power-voltage curves at different irradiance and temperature levels. This confirms your model behaves like a real panel before you build anything on top of it.
Step 3: Add a DC-DC Converter
A boost converter is commonly used to step up the PV output voltage to a usable DC bus level. This is also where you introduce duty cycle control.
Step 4: Implement MPPT
Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) ensures the system always operates at the panel's optimum power output despite changing irradiance. Perturb & Observe and Incremental Conductance are the two algorithms most commonly implemented at the student level.
Step 5: Grid-Tied Inverter (Optional Extension)
For a more advanced project, add a single-phase or three-phase inverter with a synchronization (PLL) block to connect the PV system to the grid, then study power quality and synchronization performance.
Where Students Usually Get Stuck
The most common issues are convergence errors from mismatched solver settings, incorrect per-unit scaling between the PV array and converter stage, and MPPT algorithms that oscillate instead of settling. These are all solvable with careful step-by-step debugging rather than starting over.
If you'd like guidance setting up your PV model correctly the first time, our team supports students through each stage — from PV modeling to MPPT tuning to full grid-tied simulation.
